Missing the blogs for the ebooks →
The future for public libraries is not collection but curation of information sources – not in the simplistic manner of a Scoop.it account, but in a robust and personalised way.  When our members ask for recommendations or assistance we should be able and willing to direct them to a range of publications from physical books and traditional journals to whole blogs, individual posts and even...

Digital is becoming the horseless of our age →
The first thing Lascarides says to me is, “Digital is becoming the horseless of our age.” He’s referring to the late nineteenth century time that produced publications like, “Horseless Age,” the Wired of the early automobile era. His point is that the word “digital” is becoming unnecessary because “digital is woven into everything.” You add the...

Dibrary of the present
When in Seoul, one of our library staff members took the opportunity to visit the National Digital Library of Korea. The facilities are impressive! Dibrary is the world’s first hybrid library combining digital and analogue ideas. Dibrary consists of “Dibrary Portal,” a virtual space, and a physical service space called “Dibrary Information Commons”. - About Dibrary You can also view these...

Radio National: The future of libraries →
Libraries aren’t what they used to be. They were quiet, hushed places, sometimes a refuge from the rain or the heat of summer. They had that distinct smell associated with old books, as well as that crisp new book smell. Now the local state or municipal public library has a very different feel. It’s a centre of activities, even events: there can be classes on things like how to sell...

The internet: Everything you ever need to know →
It would be ridiculous to pretend that these nine ideas encapsulate everything that there is to be known about the net. But they do provide a framework for seeing the phenomenon “in the round”, as it were, and might even serve as an antidote to the fevered extrapolation that often passes for commentary on developments in cyberspace. The sad fact is that if there is a...

10 years tops
The library as an open-to-all community hub is the present and it’s the future.  Books will be around but they’ll no longer be the only format. Prior to 1978, there was a clear distinction at Mosman Library between books of ‘literary or educational value’ and books for entertainment. The former were free to borrow and everything else cost threepence. These days YouTube...

Not a robot to be seen!
What’s this talk of libraries being run by robots in the future? Can a robot smile and offer a cheery good morning? Can a robot have a friendly chat about the ipad, the lastest bestseller or the best restaurant in Mosman? Can a robot offer a caring hand for a lost child? Can a robot have an idea? I think not! So whilst technology may be changing and information is being disseminated in ever...

The Future happened and here we still are
On this gloomy Monday morning, right at this moment, there are 18 people, parents and children, using the children’s library. Most of them will stay for at least half an hour, and may visit again later in the week, and sometimes even again the same day. So far this morning we’ve had a Storytime for kids from visiting child care centre, who were joined by several other children who...

Adora Svitak: A 12 Year Old on Digital Literacy  I interviewed Adora Svitak after being introduced by her mother and watching her TED presentation. I’m writing a book about 21st century literacies and thought that a 12 year old would give a good perspective. Which she does. A video from respected thinker and educator, Howard Rheingold

The hideous red carpet.
The red carpet isn’t as inviting as it once was. Let’s get that out of the way. Books will never move away from paper. Yes, there will always be new media that comes out but the paper is staying for good. New media such as the iPad are incredible devices and many places are seeing the use in them and they can implement them to provide people with other choices. I hope that the iPad is...

The Ideas Circus →
A mobile unit that will improve the exchange of ideas … fed by the progressive acquisition of knowledge from all places visited … able to respond quickly to the places visited and have the maximum information output. The Circus is a hybrid assembly that owes something to the idea of existing units such as travelling exhibitions, mobile theatres, teaching machines, mobile clinics,...

Every single librarian will be electric (except Amanda and Kate but they will be very old). They will run around on wheels and have sixty-five thousand arms to put all the books on the shelf. We will have books that you open and then there’s a movie inside of the book. Sabrina- Age 10

I think there will be three storeys, on the top level there will be a science lab to search around the world for different books. There will be a machine that sorts out all the books, and orders the books, and then there will be a machine that stores all the money and pays for them. There will be more librarians because it will be so big. Louis- Age 9

There will be more books and entries to get in. I will be 56! And I will still be visiting to get more books lots of different types of books. They should make it bigger, maybe another storey, I want more books about mechanics and Top Gear! Henry- Age 6

A Wind of Change – in the Nineteenth Century
A wind of change is gusting through the world of books.  Basic terms are redefined, a new vocabulary is born. To read a book, to write a book, to publish a book, to be literate, to market and distribute literature, all are assuming new and different meanings.   As with any great change our age, as well as being fraught,  is an age of great opportunity.   What follows is a brief look back to the...

Community hub
I see the library of the future being a vibrant community hub with space for people of all age groups to meet, learn, discover new technology, make new friends, relax and yes, to continue to borrow and enjoy ‘books’ in a variety of formats, both within the library and from the comfort of their own homes. It will be a ‘place of choice’ where friends can meet over a cup of coffee, where students...

Heritage Centre
I would like a Heritage Centre in the future Mosman Library to display and house great local studies collection. Perhaps with interactive displays and of course the latest in technology. So many fabulous resources on Mosman- photographs, paintings, pottery, newspapers, books etc to share with the community.

Future Space
I would love to see bigger and more flexible library spaces - space for people to meet in groups, space where people can use technology to create, learn, experience and share, space for inspiring displays and exhibitions, a permanent space for author talks and information evenings, space for people to relax and reflect and read, space for teens to get together and have fun and make as much noise...

Check out the “Black Diamond”- the Royal Danish Library in Copenhagen. Not only an impressive and very modern building from the outside, but the inside integrates a variety of cultural activities with a concert hall, restaurants, galleries etc, making it a really contemporary community space- it’s great that the library is considered on par to be housed with these other...

I would like free downloadable books and music to borrow. I see a great future for the iPad , Kindle and similiar devices and our public library should be a leader in new technology. Come on publishers and content providers get the copyright and licensing rights sorted so that libraries can afford ebooks.
